SCAN was first published in July 1973, as a typed and folded A5 sheet, the mouthpiece for the Shankill Community Association.  All the work was done from the residents’ homes and delivered free.

SCAN grew in size over the years and in the 90’s it was decided to join up with Loudspeaker – Choices’ newsletter at the time. It was first printed in Shanganagh Park House and later in Quinn’s Road.

In February 2002 our first colour issue came out. The typesetting and printing was done in Bray. Since then, as technology has improved, we have endeavoured to keep pace.  The printing is now done by a different company but we are still using the same typesetter. We now have a Website and are on Facebook.
SCAN is still compiled by a voluntary group – the Editorial Board.

The number of copies published each month has increased and is delivered, still free, currently to 3,750 homes and businesses in the greater Shankill Area by our indispensable voluntary deliverers – approximately 50.

The present team took over in May 2016. They are members of the Shankill community who are voluntary, part-time and  unpaid.

The continued existence of SCAN over the last 40 years has only been possible through the support of our advertisers, contributors and the community of Shankill.
